We’re a month into the fantasy season. Actually Week 5 just hit the books and now we’re scrambling yet again for waiver priorities, seeing if there are any FABs in our couch cushions, and checking the daily sites to see if we are ahead, in some cases seven figures ahead.

Did we miss anything in September? The action on the field was intense, and I’m sure we all had Eli Manning, Justin Forsett, Steve Smith Senior, and Larry Donnell as high on our preseason rankings as they are today. Off the field, the National Football League is still feeling its way like me stumbling around in a dark room.

What in the bleep happened in the fantasy industry in September? Let’s review.

A Fantasy Life — Now with Laugh Track?

There’s a lot of love (and hate) for the FX series The League, taking our fantasy obsession and turning it into a bunch of crazy people who have no lives (art imitates life?). The show likes to feature NFL players, but one time they threw in a fantasy expert and it was Matthew Berry. Now Berry’s getting the show, although it will be Kevin Connolly playing the role of “King of All Fantasy Media” in the TV pilot of Fantasy Life. Remember when Michael Strahan had a sitcom? Me neither.

Daily Sites Get Paid

If you think the recent Draft Kings $2.2 million contest is big bucks, think about the money that’s been poured into the sites. FanDuel had a $70 million infusion of cash right before the season started. It’s a sign that the daily fantasy industry was going to the next level, seeing as DraftKings raised $41 million just a week before the case. Perhaps they will invest a little more in their slightly-better-than-local-commercial-quality TV spots.

Suspensions Disrupt Fantasy Teams

Nobody expected Ray Rice in their fantasy lineups in Week 1, but once news of leaked video showing him punching then-fiance Janay Rice surfaced, he was cut by the team and suspended indefinitely by the NFL. The following day, we learned about the ‘exempt/commissioner’s permission list’ when Adrian Peterson was suspended due to a child-abuse case. Peterson was selected as high as #1 overall in drafts, and it doesn’t look likely that he will return in 2014.

Greg Hardy, after pleading guilty to assault in June, was added to the suspension list as well.

FanDuel Crashes in Week 2

Right as rosters were about to lock in Week 2, the FanDuel site crashed. Players who requested refunds got them, but the user experience was less than optimal.

FSWA Hall of Fame Announcement

The Fantasy Sports Writers Association announced their 2014 Hall of Fame class, including Jeff Erickson, John Hunt, and Matthew Pouliot.

It’s hard to believe October will be as eventful, but we’ll find out shortly.

Daily-Fantasy-Pulse(Author’s note: You guys can feel free to contact me on twitter as it’s closer to lineups locking and more things become clear for the days games. Additionally, Yesterday’s Studs won’t run today and I wasn’t able to get lineups in before lock last night)

6/25 Pitching

Chris Sale- There is a TON, TON of great value pitching today. Normally, I would tell you to find some cheap guys with high upside, but tonight, the sky is limit for Sale. Despite getting roughed up by Minnesota last week (how in the hell?), I think Sale comes out blazing versus the Mets tonight. The Mets best hitters, outside of David Wright, struggle with lefties like crazy. The Mets are bottom third in the league against lefties in .wOBA, wRC+ and strike out the 6th most often against them. This is a perfect matchup for Sale to explode for a complete game shutout with 15 K’s.

Jake Westbrook- Over the last 14 days, the Astros have been the 2nd worse offense in baseball. The Yankees have been the worst, which makes Yu Darvish on an equal level with the aforementioned  Chris Sale. Westbrook hasn’t exactly been a stud since his return. In his first start off the DL, he got blown up by Miami, but threw 7 shutout innings versus the Cubs. Right now, the Cubs are offensive juggernaut compared to the Astros, who are striking out 25% of the time and are ice cold with only 48 runs scored. Start Westbrook with confidence.

6/25 Hitters

Jarrod Saltalamacchia- Even out of Coors Fields, you want to target leftie hitters against Juan Nicasio. Salty is hitting .345 versus righties at home with 5 homers. Simple and cheap starter for your C slot.

Paul Goldschmidt- Paul Goldschmidt by the 2nd best hitting first basemen, behind Joey Votto. He gets to face an out of sorts Gio Gonzalez, who has allowed at least one earned run in every start since 5-12-13. While I don’t LOVE the matchup, I always want to put Goldy in versus a leftie.

Nick Franklin- HOW IS HE STILL SO CHEAP? I don’t get it. Despite facing the Smoke Monster (Jeff Locke), Franklin has upside that the other filler options at 2B and SS don’t have. Don’t crucify me for saying this (no, actually do, this is such a dumb thing to say), but I FEEL like Franklin could have a big game tonight.

Miguel Cabrera- I think Miggy’s OPS versus bad lefties is actually just an infinity symbol.

Matt Carpenter- I could easily see this being a “Stack the Lefty Cards” type of night. Lucas Harrell, God bless his heart, allows a .469 SLG% at home and Carpenter is hitting .340 versus righties. This is an easy call.

(I didn’t end up playing any yesterday, and if I don’t have a sense for the values and schedule of the day, I can’t judge the studs.

6/19 Pitchers

Chris Sale- There is not one single pitching matchup in the late games that makes me excited. Chris Sale is the best play today, obviously, but his price reflects just that. Despite a 4 ER hiccup 2 games ago, he has had 0 or 1 earned runs allowed in each of his last 5 starts. His stellar 26% K-rate  means that even if he doesn’t go deep into the game, his ceiling is still sky high. If you don’t want to gamble on the Jake Westbrook’s of the world, this is how you go.

Justin Masterson- 11-2 record for the Royals over the last 13 games? Still only 8 home runs over the last 14 days. This is NOT a team that has a huge offensive explosion just bubbling below the surface. Masterson is the only ace-ish type DFS pitcher who has a weaker opponent today. In one pitcher formats, it’s all Sale, but with two pitcher leagues, Masterson will fill my #2 slot.

6/19 Hitters

Johnathan Lucroy- Consider me a non-believer when it comes to Erik Bedard. Lucroy has a .125 ISO versus lefties and on a day when the top catcher options don’t have the right handededness matchups, I don’t mind taking a gamble on Lucroy’s power.

Brandon Moss- So, we know that Justin Grimm isn’t good right? His triple slash to lefties: .303/.358/.473. So yeah, Moss is gonna have a freaking night, as he is slugging .503 versus righties.

Jason Kipnis- Triple slash versus righties: .252/.345/.424. While Kipnis is a leftie that can still get hits off of lefties, he won’t have to worry about that against Luis Mendoza. Mendoza is allowing lefties to slug FIVE OH SEVEN against him. Yes, please start Kipnis, guys.

DJ Lemahieu- I like DJ as a value play tonight, as I think the Rockies really rough up Mark Buehrle and Lemahieu is able to score some runs, and take some walks. He’s cheap, and one of the guys I’ll be using as a filler.

Jean Segura- GUYS YOU HAVE TO PLAY SEGURA AGAINST LEFTIES. That is the number one rule of daily fantasy baseball. The last time I typed in all caps about this, Segura had a total of six hits in one single extra-inning game.

Outfielder Targets: Yoenis Cespedes- Can still bomb off of righties, will be underpriced for split. Matt Joyce- If Matt Joyce could just face righties all the time, he’d be a real All-Star. Peter Bourjous- Joe Saunders is just so horribly bad outside of Seattle, I cannot imagine this game without 10 Angels runs.

Yesterday’s Studs

Carlos Gonzalez- What foot injury? Despite the worried whispers of his owners, CarGo came out yesterday versus Phillie and knocked a homer to keep everyone quiet.

John Jaso- A criminally underrated player in daily fantasy. Having a catcher that is going to consistently get on base and not make outs is pretty huge, especially for a cheap price. Jaso walked THREE times yesterday, and didn’t make a single out.

6/17 Pitchers

Patrick Corbin- Arizona has won each and every of Patrick Corbin’s starts and his record is a sterling 9-0. He has a sub-2 ERA, a tiny 6.3% BB rate, and has allowed TEN hits to lefties in all of 2013. This is NOT who Patrick Corbin is, but arguing with these results over this large of a sample is pretty difficult. If he is due to race back to the mean, the Marlins are not the team that will do it.

Jason Vargas- If Jason Vargas just got to pitch at home, he would be an excellent fantasy pitcher. He has a 3.21 ERA at home, allows opposing hitters a .246 batting average, and 16% of opposing batters. All pretty solid numbers, especially for what he costs you in a DFS format. He gets to face the Seattle Mariners, who over the last 14 days, are the 2nd worst offense in all of the majors, with a hilarious .101 team ISO and 22.8% team K rate.

6/17 Hitters

Yasmani Grandal- Stacking versus Barry Zito worked pretty well last week, and I think I may employ that strategy today. Grandal is a SUPER cheap catching option, who isn’t even hitting .200 yet on his shortened season. He can mash from both sides of the plate and I like him against a weakening Zito.

Paul Goldschmidt- Goldschmidt, versus a young rightie who faced inferior comp in his first two starts this year, but owns a +4 ERA in the majors? Yes. Yes I’ll take that value for 9.950 on Draftday, for certain.

Miguel Cabrera- On days where I recommend cheaper pitchers, just assume this is coming.

Evereth Cabrera- Remember that Padres stack thing? I was being serious. Whatever Biogenesis did to Evereth, I don’t mind. He is playing some of the best baseball in the majors and faces Barry Zito, who isn’t fit to stop anyone at this point. Additionally, I always like  the switch hitters because they can adjust to bullpen moves later in the game.

Chris Davis- Yeah, uhh… I don’t really care who Chris Davis is facing. For some reason, his price on DraftDay has fallen to 9,700 which is way, way, way to low for someone who is hitting a homerun 7.93% percentage of his PA’s. Take advantage of the suppressed price.

Lucas Duda- I think that this is finally the night that the Braves come up with a fake injury to shelve Tim Hudson with. The Mets offense may be putrid, but the raw skills for Duda are there. He has an .ISO of .247 righties, which is good for 17th in all of baseball. He’s dirt cheap with a sky high upside.

Elliot Johnson- So somehow… this happened. The Royals absolutely destroyed Jeremy Hellickson and the Rays with 10 runs and Johnson led the charge with a homer and 3 RBI.

Gregor Blanco- Leading off for the Giants last night, Blanco smacked a double, stole a base, walked, scored twice and drove in 2 runs.

Hunter Pence- Another lefty who belted out a homerun versus Charlie Morton and the Pirates. Pence went 2/5 with 3 RBI and a stolen base.

6/14 Pitchers

Chris Sale- Sometimes, these pitching matchups are so perfect that they make me smile. Houston’s best hitters are all lefties and incapable against left handed hitters. This is a team that made JEREMY BONDERMAN look like an ace. Sale and his 24.1 K% are going to absolutely go to town against the 25%+ K% of the Astros. If you don’t start Sale tonight, you are going to regret it. This is akin to the Darvish-’Stros matchup where we almost say a no-no.

Jake Westbrook- Westbrook is scheduled to come off the DL into the best matchup in all of baseball. Yes, Stanton is back, and Ozuna and Dietrich have some pop. The Marlins are still leading Juan Pierre off and are only the 18th best offense over the last 14 days. Point being, Westbrook is cheap, had a sub 2.5 ERA in his rehab starts between A-Ball and AA, and is a great value play tonight versus the fish.

6/15 Hitters

Salvador Perez- Salvy faces Matt Moore tonight, who has allowed 14 earned runs in his last two starts and is giving up a not so great .317 wOBA to right handed batters. Perez is dirt cheap, and Moore is not pitching well right now. I would also consider Billy Butler a decent play tonight.

Joey Votto- OH MY GOD THERE IS BLOOD EVERYWHERE. Lohse might have weird reverse splits, but that is NOT going to stop Joey Votto and his 1.002 OPS versus righties from killing everything.

Nick Franklin- If you’re spending on Sale and Votto, you’ll need to save somewhere and I like Franklin as a high ceiling play from day to day. He is facing Tommy Milone, who is pretty homer prone (13 in 83 innings) and is just generally pretty bad versus lefties, where Franklin excels at the plate. The matchup is at home for Milone, which makes me less likely to play Franklin, but he is super cheap with upside.

Miguel Cabrera- Versus leftie Scott Diamond? If you don’t start him, you making money.

Everth Cabrera- Another Cabrera, more mashing. Tonight he faces Trevor Cahill, who simply hasn’t been good. Cahill has allowed 8, 5, 4 and 4 runs in his last 4 starts and I like the Padre’s to beat up on him a little bit tonight. Cabrera has the advantage of hitting on both sides of the plate in case they have to start using the bullpen early, as well.

Chris Davis- Suffering from a little cold streak right now, Davis’ price should be reduced on most sites and he gets a juicy matchup at home versus Ryan Dempster. Dempster has given up 5 home runs to lefties and I expect Davis makes that 6 tonight.

Desmond Jennings- Figuring out which Ray is going to go off on any given day is a real pain in the ass and last night, it was Desmond Jennings with 2 homers and 3 runs scored.

Tyler Colvin- Finally up from the minors and crushing like a grape! Colvin went off for 2 homers yesterday and will be a solid play going forward.

Pedro Alvarez- This could be a good sign of things to come, as Alvarez hits homers in bunches. His homer and 3 hits yesterday are certainly a positive sign.

6/12 Pitchers

Shelby Miller- If you can come up with a coherent argument to fade Miller tonight, I’d love to hear it. He is facing a team that strikes out 22.8% of the time and has scored only 39 runs over the last 14 days. They have David Wright and really, nothing else. Miller is sporting a spiffy 2.40 FIP, 27.6 K%,  and an impossibly low .48 HR/9. If you go cheap on pitching tonight, you’ll probably regret it.

Jeremy Bonderman/Jordan Lyles- This is not a strategy for the faint of heart. The over under in this game in 7.5 and it’s excruciatingly possible that it goes underneath that. Bonderman and Lyles are both DIRT cheap with a reasonable upside. The Astros still strike out a quarter of the time and literally no one on the Mariners is an above average hitter right now, with Mike Morse on the DL.

6/12 Hitters

Buster Posey- Posey’s current triple slash versus Lefties: .321/.381/.536. That’s pretty darned good. Posey will face Francisco Lirano, who every single baseball fan in the world is waiting to melt down. It may not come tonight, but given Liriano’s likelihood to explode at any given moment, I like Posey as the top catcher play tonight.

Paul Goldschmidt- Hyun-Jin Ryu has had an absolutely fantastic year, but so has Paul Goldschmidt. Against lefties, he’s slugging .618 with a .948 OPS. If you want a high, high, high upside play, Goldschmidt is your guy.

Matt Carpenter- He let you down yesterday, but tonight against Dillon Gee, I expect things to go much more smoothly. Gee can’t get lefties out and Carpenter wreacks havoc on righties. I can see an argument for going with Robinson Cano against Straily and Oakland, but I like Cano at home more than on the road.

Micheal Young- The Phillies have apparently decided that Micheal Young is a legit leadoff. While I disagree with that, that does increase his daily fantasy value, especially against Mike Pelfrey. Young is hitting .279 against righties and is facing a pitcher with a plus 6 ERA who has only looked passable against the Royals.

Troy Tulowitzski/Carlos Gonzalez- This game has an over/under of 11 1/2. I don’t really know what else you need. They are facing a AAA level arm in Ross Ohlendorf and I fully expect to be writing these two up in tomorrow’s “Yesterday’s Studs” segment.

Yasiel Puig- Consider me the idiot who didn’t buy into the hype and didn’t start Puig during his 2 homer barrage last night. Seriously, the dude is a masher.

Stephen Drew- I never see it coming with this guy. He will always have these random explosions, like last night where he went 4/5 with 2 doubles and a homer.

Yoenis Cespedes- Puig wasn’t alone as a Cuban outfielder absolutely mashing last night. Cespedes went 3/5 with 2 dingers as well.

6/5 Pitchers

Clayton Kershaw- Even at highest priced pitcher on any daily fantasy site anywhere, Kershaw is worth the price against the Padres. The Padres are one of the worst offenses in all of baseball and they really don’t have any hitters who scare you at all. Chase Headley is on the coldest slump of his career and only Jedd Gyorko is really playing like he belongs in the bigs. Kershaw is an easy decision.

P.J Walters- I don’t know what other arguments need to be made against streaming pitchers against the Royals. They have been consistently getting shut out and have hit less home runs than Yasiel Puig over the last 2 weeks. Those home runs came from bench bat Miguel Tejada. The team has gone to the desperate measures of firing their pitching coach and bringing in hometown legend George Brett to do the job. Walters is dirt cheap and solid option against a bad offense.

6/5 Hitters

Paul Goldschmidt- His price should be a little lower because he is facing a righty, but not one that should scare anyone off. Goldschmidt is hitting .346 against righties and faces yet another St. Louis minor league call up in Joe Kelly, who has a plus 6 ERA in the majors so far this year.

Omar Quintanilla- Leading off against Dan Haren is a pretty good place to be, even if Quintanilla is a met. So far, he is hitting .615 versus righties in his brief call up. While that clearly isn’t sustainable, it does indicate that he has the ability to hit righties very well. Haren is giving up 1.7 HR/9 and just hasn’t been himself this year.

Manny Machado- While Machado does have some level or reverse splits, he is still slugging .431 versus lefties and opposing pitcher Dallas Keuchel is giving up a .367 wOBA to right handed batters. Machado is a cheaper play with upside.

Shin-Soo Choo- Choo’s abilities versus right handed pitchers cannot be overstated. His .492 OBP versus righties is near best in the league, if not for his teammate Joey Votto (who also makes a good play today). Get Choo in your lineups.

Cheap Outfield Options: All of these following guys are cheap on their respective sites and worth a play today: Gerrado Parra, Lucas Duda, Yasiel Puig, Chris Parmelee, and Chris Carter.

Dominic Brown- Whatever Dom Brown has changed, it’s working. The dude is simply playing out his mind right now and is getting pretty impossible to fade, even at ridiculous prices. Last night, he went 3/4 with yet another homer.

Rickie Weeks- The ice cold Rickie Weeks finally got a little something going last night with a triple and a homer for the Brew Crew.

Yadier Molina- After returning from a one game suspenion, Yadier had no problem finding his groove as he went 2/4 with a homer against Trevor Cahill and the D-Backs.

6/4 Pitchers

Felix Hernandez- The Chicago White Sox’s bats have gone entirely and utterly cold. Last night, they made Joe Saunders capable of 6 innings of one run ball. Over the last 14 days, the White Sox have the worst offense in baseball, with 3 home runs and only 27 runs scored. Fading Hernandez tonight just isn’t ideal.

Jordan Zimmerman- He got roughed up by Chris Davis and the Orioles in his last start, so his price is actually reduced from it’s normal number on several sites that I play on. We should all be taking advantage of this, as Zimmerman faces the pitifiul New York Mets tonight. The White Sox offense has been the worst over the last 30 days, but the Mets have been the second worst, with only 81 runs scored over that time frame. They are also striking out 24.4% of the time, which bodes well for a high scoring night from Zimmerman.

6/4 Hitters

Joe Mauer- About as close of a lock to be in my lineup as any player tonight. Mauer absolutely slaughters righties with a .325 average, and Luis Mendoza is perfectly obliging, allowing left handed batters a .372 wOBA.

Chris Davis- Against a bad righty, in a hitter’s parks. These are the sort of nights where you refresh your scores at midnight and ask yourself “Why didn’t I play the league leader in home runs?”. Davis is slugging .844 versus righties. That is not a type. He is slugging higher than the league average for OPS. Get him in your lineup.

Chase Headley- When the Padres face bad starting pitching, I like to target Headley as my undervalued ‘star’. We have seen tremendous power and batting average skills from Headley but he just hasn’t been able to get himself going quite yet. Tonight against lefty Ted Lilly, Headley is a cheap play with upside.

Jean Segura- If the Brewers are playing a righty, there is a 100% chance I’m going to slot Segura in on sites that have him appropriately priced. Some sites have jacked him up to Tulo levels, which is just insane, but on sites where his price places him next to players like Everth Cabrera, he’s a lock against Righties.

Carlos Gonzalez- Against a righty, you have to do it. Great American Ballpark is just as much of a bandbox as Coors Field, and Carlos is slugging .597 versus righties.

Jacoby Ellsbury- Holy stolen base, Batman! In 5 at-bats and 4 trips on base last night, Jacoby Ellsbury stole FIVE BASES. Congratulations if you played him and reaped those benefits.

Carlos Gonzalez- This play was significantly  more obvious than Ellsubry. In fact, Gonzalez was played in an astounding 35% of Wiz Walkoff teams yesterday and reward his owners with 2 hits, a walk and 3 stolen bases.

Logan Schafer- My value play of the day, who was leading off for the Brew Crew, went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI.

5/31 Pitchers

Stephen Strasburg- There are seriously an insane amount of starting pitching options to chose from today. On sites where you only have to start one, I recommend Strasburg. He has the best combination of matchup and upside potential. Clayton Kershaw is being forced to pitch in Coors Field, and Max Scherzer’s price has just gotten absolutely insane. Strasburg is the owner of a 24.5%, which is actually lower than 30.2% number in 2012. The Braves, on the other hand, strike out 24% of the time, which is only worse than the Astro’s. Provide Stras can keep the ball in the park, he is going to mow the Braves down.

Hisashi Iwakuma- There are a couple different ways you could go with your starting pitching slot. I don’t hate starting Shawn Marcum against the Marlins, or even going insane cheap and starting Jacob Turner against the lackluster Mets. Iwakuma, however, presents a happy medium of affordable price and realistic upside. The Twins rank 15th in the league in runs scored and strike out 21.4% of the time. Iwakuma has only allowed more than 2 earned runs twice and strikes out 8.5 batters per 9 innings.

5/31 Hitters

Jason Castro- Still cheap, still hitting in the 3, against facing a mediocre right handed pitcher. Fade him at your own risk.

Adrian Gonzalez- Far and away, the best first base play of the day. In Coors field, against a right handed pitcher allowing a .377 wOBA to left handed hitters. Just as with Castro, fade him with discretion.

Daniel Murphy- Jacob Turner is making his first big league start of 2013, and while the kid does have some talent, he’s no Clayton Kershaw. Murphy is hitting near the top of the Mets lineup with a .331/.373/.556 triple slash versus righties. A cheap play, especially if you are hopping on the expensive pitchers.

Chase Headley- Going back to the Headley bandwagon; he is super under priced but still has day to day star potential in a way that no other third basemen has today (other than Miggy). Facing Chad Jenkins, a nothing special call up with an 88 MPH fastball, Headley should be able to initiate some offense.

Jean Segura- I don’t care that the lefty Segura is facing is Cole Hamels; Hamel’s mechanics have been off for a while and he just isn’t intimidating anyone. Segura absolutely RAKES versus lefties, with a .378/.403/.622 triple slash versus them so far in 2013.

Matt Joyce- To say that Matt Joyce murders righties is to say that the Niagra Falls is wet. He absolutely hammer smashes the, with 8 home runs in only 143 PA’s. Joyce will face Corey Kluber tonight and is a sneaky value play.
