Are you a degenerate? Do you fall asleep at night contemplating the value of Greg Olsen in the 8th versus Jordan Cameron in the 12th? Better yet, do you view Fantasy Football as an extension of your football knowledge, or an extension of your knowledge in strategy and gambling? For those who are confident in their player evaluation and who have a background in poker, MFL10s from MyFantasyLeague.com, are basically a dream come true.
Easy to Play: MFL10s
When I found out that these leagues I existed, I almost passed out from excitement. I could play in a league where all I had to do was draft the best possible players according to my projections and the best starting lineup would be processed each week and I could compete against the general populace?
Sounds way too good to be true, but it’s not.
There are two types of drafts. One is the draft-only setting that I prefer. In that scenario, all that the owner is responsible for is a $10 payment and then participation in a 20-round, slow, email draft where they select a group of players for a weekly starting lineup of 1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, 1 TE, 1 WR/RB flex, a kicker and a defense.
In the MFL10s draft-only leagues, your team is scored by the software automatically putting in the highest scoring lineup for you each and every week.
There are no waiver moves, no trades, no adds or drops. That means in the draft-only format, you have to take at least two quarterbacks, two kickers and two defenses, to cover bye weeks. There is a different kind of research that goes into succeeding at these leagues.
For example, knowing the general strength of a division’s offenses is more helpful than determining a projection of points scored for a defense.
Two defenses that I like to target are the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos. The Texans get to face the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans twice a year; both of those offenses suffer from lack of talent at the quarterback position, which is a pretty good indicator of how they will be against Fantasy defenses.
The Broncos are obvious. They get to face the awful, awful Oakland Raiders and the terrible San Diego Chargers. Even the Kansas City Chiefs are capable of having a complete clunker with Alex Smith at the helm. Andy Reid is no stranger to dumpster fire games.
In this format, running back and wide receiver depth becomes even more important. If your first-round running back goes down, there is no scouring the waiver wire for replacements. Since eight roster spots automatically go to 2 QBs, 2 TEs, 2 Ks and 2 DSTs, that means only 12 possible slots remain for wide receivers and running backs. I would recommend using all of those slots and not drafting a third quarterback or tight end.
Handcuffing becomes a little bit more attractive as an option, especially on players where their handcuff comes particularly cheap. Jamaal Charles and Kniles Davis, Maurice Jones-Drew and Justin Forsett, and DeMarco Murray and Lance Dunbar are all solid options because the handcuffs are so inexpensive.
MFL10s Traditional Leagues
MyFantasyLeague also offers MFL10s in a more traditional weekly management setting. In that format, the roster settings and scoring rules stay the same, but each week you are expected to start a traditional lineup.
In the weekly management setting, there are also waivers to be processed each week and you can add and drop players. This changes the strategy up quite a bit, as it makes streaming quarterbacks, tight ends, defenses and kickers more of a possibility.
The difference from the best-ball format makes the weekly management leagues very different in terms of strategy and most mainstream Fantasy advice applies to these leagues. The main difference in these weekly management leagues is that trading between teams is not allowed.
What’s five times better than MFL10s? … MFL50s!
For the true Fantasy freaks, MyFantasyLeague.com also provides the option to play MFL50s, which function the exact same as MFL10s but the entry fee is — you guessed it — $50.
Overall, the MFL10s are a nice break from the traditional strategy involved in redraft and dynasty leagues. It forces the players to think about Fantasy Football in a much purer way and rewards those who are very gifted in the terms of strategy.
Just as online poker players used to make their livings through choosing games wisely, those who hope to profit off of Fantasy Football that choose these games to supplement their incomes will be pleasantly surprised with the results.
