Five Notes for Today’s Games

1. Starting Pitchers-

  • Francisco Liriano LHP PIT @ CIN- The Liriano of old has returned. At least that’s what his stats say. Liriano’s velocity is back up, and he’s sporting a rather sexy 2.00 ERA. An awesome start today could give him 10 wins and a sub-2.00 ERA. That would be a pretty incredible resurrection for the powerful LHP. I think the Reds LHB will have trouble with Liriano’s slider (as most LHB do). Liriano should be another very popular SP on DraftKings because he has the best matchup of the higher priced pitchers but is priced as the 6th best.
  • Bud Norris RHP HOU vs SEA- Norris is lights-out at home. He always has been throughout his career. You are going to see a lot of people using him. So far this year he has a 2.27 ERA through 11 home starts. Seattle can be a dangerously powerful team as seen by them being 2nd in the Majors in home runs. Fading Norris may be just as smart a play, but I like the potential for a good start at a relatively cheap $7,200.
  • Jeremy Hefner RHP NYM vs PHI- Hefner is a beast. He has a 2.17 ERA over his last 11 starts. Hefner is also a much better pitcher at home with a 2.68 ERA. I think you’ll see a rather pumped up Mets team after hosting the All Star game. Like Norris, Hefner is only 7,200. For me it’s only a decision between these two as to who I’m using. Hef may be the sneakiest, smart pitcher play of the day. Hef is a must-start in Starstreet’s Q for his last name alone.
  • Chad Gaudin RHP SF vs ARI- If you are going cheap with your SP on DK today, it doesn’t get any cheaper than Gaudin. Actually Gaudin has been pretty good fantasy points-wise over his last 6 starts. He actually has a better FPPG over the last six than Strasburg who is the most expensive. I think on a day where everybody is going to be stacking, I think Gaudin is a must-start. For stackers and non-stackers alike, his 5K salary allows you to spend other places. Chad-Gaudin-SF-Giants

2. Stud Hitters-

  • Mike Napoli C/1B BOS- Love the fact that Napoli got some rest over the All Star break. He’ll face the meat-throwing Pettitte to further enhance my love for him today.
  • Matt Wieters C BAL- Wieters usually finds his way onto my list when he faces a LHP. He’ll face Derek Holland today.
  • Prince Fielder 1B DET- Where has all the power gone? I thought Fielder would dominate the HR Derby’s first round, and he barely even showed up. I will say that he hit the longest HR of the night however. Ervin Santana is not going to be able to contain all of the Tigers hitters. Fielder is a great play against the RHP.
  • Allen Craig 1B/OF STL- Somehow Allen Craig is only $4,700. He also offers multi-postition elig. He’s hitting historically well with RISP and looks to be in an incredible zone.
  • Jason Kipnis 2B CLE- There’s little doubt that Kipnis is the top 2B play of the day. I love using him against most RHP. The fact that he’ll face Mike Pelfrey only helps his case. He was just warming back up before the break.
  • Dustin Pedroia 2B BOS- Pedroia doesn’t have a HR vs a LHP this year. I think that could change today. He’s hitting .333 and slugging .480. He’ll be playing at home vs LHP Pettitte.
  • Miguel Cabrera 3B DET- **must start** I think most teams will NOT have Miggy today because of his price tag. That’s exactly why I think he’s a must start. As shown by his plate appearances during the All-Star game, he’s really locked in.
  • Pedro Alvarez 3B PIT- Pedro is my pick to go deep today. He’ll face RHP Leake in a park that he has been mashing in this year.
  • Jean Segura SS MIL- Jacob Turner has been exhibiting reverse splits so far in his career. Segura likes hitting RHP. To me this play just makes sense.
  • Cody Ransom SS/3B CHC- Ransom is almost a must start against any mediocre LHP. He has 7 HRs in 69 ABs so far this year vs LHP.
  • Bryce Harper OF WAS- Love, love, love Harper today coming in after the power display during the derby. He’ll face RHP Nolasco and look to pick right back up where he left off.
  • Austin Jackson OF DET- AJax finishes my mini stack of the Tigers vs RHP Santana. AJax has also hit RHP much better this year with 4 of his 5 HRs, all 6 SBs, and a .327 AVG.
  • Carlos Gonzalez OF COL- Samardzija was straight awful in his last start. CarGo has 17 HRs vs RHP. The exciting thing about CarGo this year is that he’s hitting better away from Coors against LHP. That is just a testament to how awesome he is playing.
  • Alfonso Soriano OF CHC- Let’s see if Soriano’s hot streak has stayed hot. It’s a matchup you have to love as he’ll face LHP De La Rosa in Coors Field. I only worry that his price tag my drag him out of most possible budgets. I don’t think a lot of the Midsummer Classic players will be using Soriano.
  • Yoenis Cespedes OF OAK- Cespedes hasn’t gone deep since June 21, but he’s moved by his confidence. It’s not an ideal matchup vs RHP Weaver, but I think swagger goes a long way for young inexperienced hitters. MLB: Seattle Mariners at Oakland Athletics

3. Value Hitters-

  • Chris Herrmann C MIN- Herrmann has been called up and should be in the LU as an OF with the demotion of Parmalee. I like Herrmann as a stack header because he is 2K and a catcher. That’s the perfect combo in my opinion.
  • Victor Martinez C/1B DET- VMart was hitting .458 over his last 10 going into the break.
  • Sean Halton 1B MIL- Halton is only on this list because he has the potential of seeing the field. He’s just another stack filler at 2K.
  • Brandon Belt 1B SF- It was nice to see Belt have multi-hit games in 2 of his last 3 before heading into the break. Look for a “Belted” today against a really struggling RHP Ian Kennedy.
  • Dan Uggla 2B ATL- Uggla’s power display has been very real. If he gets a hold of LHP Danks meat pitches today, look for them to go a very long way. Not often do you get a guy with so many HRs at a $3,800 price tag especially at 2B. He is boom-or-bust.
  • Brian Dozier 2B/SS MIN- Dozier is hitting .302 AVG with a .916 OPS vs LHP.
  • Brett Lawrie 3B TOR- Lawrie is a speculative play by me, but he’s gotten to get a couple of games under his belt. I think he’ll come out of this break and flash some of that potential we all knew was within him. Price has been struggling a bit vs RHB.
  • Trevor Plouffe 3B MIN- Plouffe is hitting a  monstrous .351 vs LHP with a .976 OPS. If the Twins are going to get any power in this one, I have a feeling it will be Plouffe doing the damage. Kazmir has been very hit-or-miss as to how dominant he’ll pitch on any given day.
  • Jose Iglesias SS BOS- Iglesias has cooled quite a bit lately. I like that he still has a .429 AVG  and a 1.046 OPS vs LHP. Obviously, that’s not sustainable, but he’s only 3,500 and faces LHP Pettitte.
  • Grant Green SS OAK- If you are stacking, you will need a 2K guy like Green to start. I don’t know if he will actually produce anything, but that salary can go along way to helping the rest of your team.
  • J.D. Martinez OF HOU- **must start** Historically, Martinez has been a better hitter against LHP. I have no faith in LHP Saunders away from home. The Astros are great sneaky stack as they are top 10 vs LHP.
  • Aaron Hicks OF MIN- Hicks has 4 HRs in 54 ABs vs LHP. One of those was off LHP Kazmir back on May 4.
  • Marcell Ozuna OF MIA- .352 AVG with RISP. I think you’ll see Lohse give up some baserunners today.
  • Logan Morrison OF MIA- LoMo is a borderline must start. LoMo has been feasting on RHP since his return to the LU. Lohse has given up 19 HRs so far this year.

4. Stack ‘em Up-

  • Braves @ LHP John Danks
  • Rays @ RHP Esmil Rogers
  • Tigers @ RHP Ervin Santana
  • Red Sox vs LHP Andy Pettitte
  • Astros vs LHP Joe Saunders

5. My DK Midsummer Classic Line Up

3B- Miguel Cabrera DET $6,900

Five Notes for ALL Games Today

**Weather Warning- Phillies/Nationals, Braves/Reds, Yankees/Royals (early), and Orioles/Rangers**

1. Starting Pitchers

  • Matt Moore LHP TB vs MIN (early)- **must start** Moore is locked back into beast mode. He’s only given up 1 ER total over his last three starts. He also has 26 Ks in 19.1 IP during that span. With Willingham out of the line up, the Twins RHB are not impressive. If Moore can maintain his control, he will be dominant and well worth his $9,100 salary.
  • Ryan Dempster RHP BOS @ SEA (early)- Dempster hasn’t given up more than 3 ER in his last 8 games. He’ll give up the home run at some point, but he’s almost a lock to give you a consistent performance otherwise especially on sites that overvalue the strikeout.
  • Madison Bumgarner LHP SF @ SD- Padres hit LHP pretty well, but Bumgarner is no ordinary LHP. I expect him to strike out a host of Padres, rack up the Win, and go is usual 7 inning pitched.
  • Miguel Gonzalez RHP BAL vs TEX- Oh, I don’t feel especially great about this call. The Rangers have been one of the hotter offensive teams. I tried to give you one cheap option to go with Bumgarner for the late games. If you can afford to run Zimmerman out there instead, that might be the safer call. Gonzalez has performed very well this year. He’s only had 1 start in 15 where he gave up more than 5 ER. He’ll strike out about 5 batters a game and has decent control. 2013 has somewhat mirrored the success that Miguel had in 2012 so there is reason to think that he is more legit than not. Tread carefully, this is the high risk/high reward play of the day. matt moore

2. Stud Hitters

  • Mike Napoli C/1B BOS- Napoli didn’t do anything in yesterday’s beat down of the Mariners, but I think he’ll have a different kind of game today. There aren’t any really good stud options at catcher for the early games. You might want to go value.
  • Wilin Rosario C COL- Rosario has 2 HRs and a .325 AVG over his last 10 games and back-to-back XBH games. LHP Capuano is a very favorable matchup for Rosario.
  • Edwin Encarnacion 1B TOR- **must start** E5 has been struggling lately, but he will turn it around today.
  • Chris Davis 1B/OF BAL- ** must start** It doesn’t get much better than this matchup for the Major League leader in home runs. He’ll face a quad A RHP.
  • Robinson Cano 2B NYY- There isn’t a hotter 2B play, and I expect the Yanks to be pumped up with the return of their leader.
  • Brandon Phillips 2B CIN- Phillips has been much better away from Cincy hitting .304 with 8 of his 12 HRs on the road.
  • Kyle Seager 3B SEA- You know Dempster is going to serve one up. Seager is the best bet to be the guy to do the hitting. He’s rocking a .443 AVG over his last 11 games with 5 XBH.
  • Manny Machado 3B BAL- Machado loves to mash RHP. He’ll face an underwhelming RHP Ross Wolf.
  • Jose Reyes SS TOR- **must start** Reyes will face a RHP that I’ve honestly never heard of today. I think that should mark a must start.
  • Hanley Ramirez SS LAD- **must start** Hanley has been the best player in the game since coming off the DL. All this talk about Puig has ignited a fire in Ramirez that is unrivaled by any other hitter right now.
  • Jose Bautista OF TOR- Echoing the Blue Jays stack, Bautista is a little pricier but remains an option as his power has been awfully powerful lately.
  • Colby Rasmus OF TOR- Rasmus has a .325 AVG and 2 HRs over his last 11 games and is always in play against RHP.
  • Austin Jackson OF DET- I like Jackson’s chances of getting a steal if Flowers is behind the plate even with LHP Sale on the mound. Sale has also been a bit more human lately.
  • Allen Craig OF STL- Craig has hit .443 over his last 11 games. I all but guarantee him to rake a couple of hits in today.
  • Yasiel Puig OF LAD- Puig has been pretty bad lately, but I like his chances to bust out of his slump in a big way vs LHP Pomeranz.
  • Bryce Harper OF WAS- His price has dropped a bit, and he’ll finally get to face a RHP. I’m in as Harper is due for a home run. Chris+Davis+Baltimore+Orioles+Photo+Day+YLvUcsahA9Xl

3. Value Hitters

  • Mike Zunino C SEA- Only 2K on DK and with Dempster’s propensity to give up homers, Zunino looks like the perfect roster-filling, speculative play.
  • Brian McCann C ATL- $3,600 on DK is worth any risk associated with facing RHP Mat Latos. McCann is hitting .498 over last 10 games. That’s insane.
  • Lyle Overbay 1B NYY- Overbay hit a grand slam yesterday and could keep that trend going.
  • Brandon Belt 1B SF- Belt is only 3,800 on DK and has 8 of his 9 HRs vs RHP.
  • Kelly Johnson 2B TB- Johnson has 5 RBI in his last three games and will face RHP Mike Pelfrey today.
  • Dan Uggla 2B ATL- When you draft Uggla you hope for that game where he walks and gets an extra base hit. There’s a good chance you will not get that Uggla, but at least the Ks won’t kill you on DraftKings.
  • Jose Iglesias SS BOS- He’s not going to win anything for you, but he’s been a lock for a hit and something else lately. He’s only 2,900 on DK today.
  • J.J. Hardy SS BAL- I think you need to spend on SS today, but if you go cheap, I like Hardy vs the unintimidating RHP Ross Wolf.
  • Lonnie Chisenhall 3B CLE- Chisenhall isn’t very good, but if Dickey is serving it up then there could be a good opportunity for Chisenhall to show off that power stroke.
  • Anthony Rendon 3B WAS- I expect Rendon to continue to hit. Harper’s presence in the LU makes Rendon a better hitter especially when they slot him as the number 2 hitter.
  • Raul Ibanez OF SEA- Ibanez power stroke has been one of the more remarkable things of the 2013 season. Dempster has average one home run over each of his last 11 starts. There is a chance.
  • Michael Bourn OF CLE- I like Bourn’s chances vs RHP RA Dickey and JP Arencibia. That combo should provide hits, steals, and maybe even runs.
  • Mike Carp OF BOS- Carp has been a RHP killer all year. That shouldn’t change today.
  • Darin Ruf OF PHI- Keep running him out there folks. The power is real.
  • Jason Heyward OF ATL- **must start** JHey is hitting the ball pretty sharply. He has been very unlucky. His unluckiness works to your advantage as he is only $3,600 on DK now.
  • Carlos Quentin OF SD- Quentin’s power is rounding into form. He is very formidable against all LHP even Madison Bumgarner. $3,800 makes me willing to take the chance.

4. Stack ‘em Up

  • Blue Jays @ RHP Danny Salazar
  • Royals (mini stack) @ LHP Andy Pettitte
  • Dodgers vs LHP Drew Pomeranz
  • Orioles vs RHP Ross Wolf
  • Cardinals @ RHP Edwin Jackson

5. My DraftKings LATE GPP Line up

P- Madison Bumgarner SF $10,400

P- Miguel Gonzalez BAL $6,300

C- Brian McCann ATL $3,600

1B- Chris Davis BAL $5,400

2B- Brian Roberts BAL $3,100

3B- Manny Machado BAL $4,100

SS- Hanley Ramirez LAD $5,400

OF- Nate McLouth BAL $3,500

Five Notes for Today’s Games

**Watch out for weather in Cubs/Angels, A’s/Pirates, and Rangers/Orioles. All have 40+ percent chance of precipitation.**

1. Starting Pitchers-

  • Adam Wainwright RHP STL vs HOU- I’m not typing anything about this matchup. If you don’t understand that you should start RH Aces vs the Astros, you may need to take a break from daily fantasy baseball. Wainwright is expensive, and he rightfully should be. He’s easily the top SP of the day.
  • Julio Teheran RHP ATL @ MIA- Time for the Julio Teheran fanboy to get back on my soap box. Teheran has figured out how to pitch. He has all the skills to be a truly dominant ace one day. My favorite improvement in his game has been the way he has pitched to contact rather than going after the strike out every time. People forget that Teheran is only 22 years old. His K/BB rate is up in the realm of Adam Wainwright, Cliff Lee, and King Felix Hernandez. Simmer on that for a second. Miami is an improved offensive team with the returns of Stanton and Morrison, but they will still struggle to get anything going against this version of Teheran.
  • Justin Verlander RHP DET vs CHW- If you follow me on twitter (@naturalslugger), then you would know that I’ve been preaching patience with Verlander. I’ve even had to defend that position with other analysts in the industry. In Verlander’s last start we saw him hitting that 98 MPH plateau that he must hit in order to set up his off speed pitches. He threw stronger later in the game and held the potent Jays to only 3 hits. Today he’ll face the anemic White Sox offense that may rival the Marlins as the poorest in the game. Verlander is a reasonable 8,500 on Fanduel this evening and will be used at a very high rate I’m sure.
  • Cole Hamels LHP PHI vs WAS- We saw just how bad the Nationals can be against LHP yesterday as they struggled to score runs against LHP John Lannan. Hamels is a much better LHP than Lannan. Hamels hasn’t been very good this year. In fact, it’s strange how similar this season has been to his 2009 season. The LineDrive rate of 22.4 percent is the highest of his career. It appears his fastball has been more hittable than years past as I analyze the Pitch f/x. I don’t expect much out of Hamels for the season, but I think he’s well worth a look today. I’m beginning to feel like ANY LHP is worth a look vs the Nationals.
  • Joe Blanton RHP LAA @ CHC- Joe Blanton is going to make you sick if pick him as your starter today. This play isn’t for the faint of heart. Blanton has some really interesting underlying facts so far in 2013, he has the highest swinging strike percentage of his career (10 percent which is top 25 in MLB). During the month of June, Blanton had a 3.44 ERA and 0.91 WHIP highlighted by 40 Ks to just 5 walks in 34 IP. The Cubs are unpredictable or else I’d be more of a Blanton guy today than I already am. He’s also facing Travis Wood who is somehow playing like a front-line ace. The win might be a little hard to come by. Blanton may be more of a GPP play or 2nd/3rd SP, but I think he’ll rack up some Ks and get his points. Let’s just hope he doesn’t give them back with earned runs.
  • Dillon Gee RHP NYM @ SF- Just in case you already wanted to stop reading my advice after mentioning Blanton, I bring you a Dillon Gee reccommendation, and you definitely click away. For those that stayed, Gee is a super-secret play today. Other than one blow up 5 ER start @PHI, Gee hasn’t given up more than 2 ER in 6 of his last 7 starts. He’s striking out a fair amount of batters as well. Gee is a bit of a reverse splits RHP. The LHB don’t scare me for the Giants. Heck, the RHB don’t scare me either sans Posey. The Giants have just been bad in July so far. They are last in every measurable offensive category (exaggeration), but they are hitting .169 and have OPS of .518 during this very small sample size of ABs. Even with the small sample size, you can’t ignore the slump. Gee is hot. The Giants are not. Put them in a pot, and what ya got?.. Super-secret play of the day, that’s what ya got. adam_wainwright_celebrating-24809

2. Stud Hitters

  • Brian McCann C ATL- Borderline must start these days. There aren’t many other top tier options behind the plate today.
  • Jonathan Lucroy C MIL- Lucroy likes to hit HRs in bunches. He has a HR in each of his last 3 games. I would not be surprised if he had another good game against soft-tossing LHP Tony Cingrani.
  • Joey Votto 1B CIN- Peralta has brought his splits down a bit vs LHB, but I think we see a reversion to his past struggles today.
  • Paul Goldschmidt 1B ARI- I have no belief in the success of Nolasco tonight. Goldy has 4 multi-hit games in his last 5 and 4 XBH during that span. I’d still go Votto, but Goldy is  an option.
  • Ian Kinsler 2B TEX- **Must start** Love Kinsler’s matchup today vs LHP Zach Britton. While Kinsler has yet to HR off of a LHP this year, he has historically smashed them. I expect he’ll turn that around today.
  • Chase Utley 2B PHI- Utley has been hitting LHP pretty well this year. He may be worth a look vs rookie LHP Taylor Jordan.
  • David Wright 3B NYM- 9 games hit streak combined with Wright’s ability to smack LHP.
  • Kyle Seager 3B SEA- **must start** Seager vs a bad RHP, um yes please. Easy call.
  • Adrian Beltre 3B TEX- Beltre is only $3,300 on FD. You will want to seriously consider him at this price. If not for my love fest with Seager today, Beltre would easily be my top option. Beltre is in the zone. He has 5 multi-hit game in his last 6 and 4 HRs during that span. I just wish I could roster Seager and Beltre. If you play on other sites than FD that offer this scenario, please take advantage of it.
  • Jose Reyes SS TOR- Reyes is the best stud option at SS today. I urge you to consider going cheap at SS today, but if you decide to roll out an expensive shortstop, I think Reyes offers the best bang for your buck facing RHP Ubaldo Jimenez.
  • Hanley Ramirez SS LAD- If you can somehow afford him, you should use him. I only avoid because his price is a little too high for my liking.
  • Ryan Braun OF MIL- Braun is back! I expect him in the LU vs LHP Tony Cingrani. Take advantage of the price depression while you still can.
  • Nelson Cruz OF TEX- Cruz loves to hit the ball far against RHP. Easy call as we continue the Rangers stack.
  • Raul Ibanez OF SEA- No clue what’s gotten into Ibanez these days, but can I have some please. Raise your hand if you knew that Ibanez has 22 HRs this season. Oh you knew that. Now raise your hand if you knew that he was in the middle of a 13 game hit streak. You knew that too, huh. Now raise your hand if you are going to roster him against a bad RHP Allen Webster. That’s what I thought.
  • Shin-Soo Choo OF CIN- Choo has a hit in each of his last 6 games, including 3 multi-hit games. While Choo has been struggling, he keeps pumping a .326 AVG with all 12 of his HRs vs LHP.
  • Alfonso Soriano OF CHC- 6 HRs in last 10 games is nothing to scoff at. He’ll face RHP Joe Blanton who has been dominant but can still serve one up on occasion. If you want to fade Blanton, there isn’t a hotter Cubs hitter than Soriano. raul-ibanez-mariners

3. Value Hitters

  • Matt Wieters C BAL- He looked lost yesterday until he hit that 2 run jack. Expect the same today.
  • Carlos Santana C CLE- $3,200 just seems to cheap not to list as a cheap C play on Fanduel.
  • Darin Ruf 1B PHI- **Must start** Ruf is a very enticing HR play facing a rookie LHP in Taylor Jordan. Ruf has hit safely in all three of his first three games.
  • Rickie Weeks 2B MIL- Weeks is only $3,100 on FD and should find a LHP Cingrani matchup to his liking. Weeks hit .355 in June and has 6 Ks to 5 BBs here in July.
  • Dustin Ackley 2B SEA- Ackley is a minimum price guy on FD today and could be a great filler play. Don’t expect him to set the world on fire but I could see enough points to get value facing a weak RHP.
  • Martin Prado 3B ARI- Prado has been much better in recent days. I am not a fan of Nolasco. Don’t be schocked if Prado and the D’backs have a big day.
  • Jimmy Rollins SS PHI- Rollins has been a lot better towards the end of June and into July. His price has yet to reflect his skill gains. I like the matchup against rookie LHP Taylor Jordan.
  • Elvis Andrus SS TEX- Andrus has a five game hit streak rolling. I don’t know how many SBs he’ll get.
  • Jason Heyward OF ATL- Somehow JHey is still underpriced. He’s just $3,000 on FD today. I’m sure his ownership will be through the roof facing RHP Henderson Alvarez.
  • Scott Hairston OF WAS- Hairston is a very high risk/high reward play today. His 8 HRs in 78 ABs vs LHP and a meager .179 AVG against LHP echo that sentiment.
  • Josh Reddick OF OAK- It’s only a matter of time until we see the power of Reddick displayed once again. He went deep yesterday, I would not be shocked if he took the hard-throwing RHP Gerrit Cole deep today.
  • Matt Joyce OF TB- I know Joyce is in a HR funk, but what better way to get yourself out of a funk then to face a rookie RHP that isn’t quite ready to be in the Majors. Joyce is due to go deep today.
  • Michael Saunders OF SEA- Saunders has 3 XBH and 5 RBIs in his last 3 games.

4. Stack ‘em Up

  • Phillies vs LHP Taylor Jordan
  • Mariners vs RHP Allen Webster
  • Braves @ RHP Henderson Alvarez
  • Rays vs RHP Kyle Gibson
  • Reds LHB @ RHP Wily Peralta

5. My Fanduel GPP LU

Five Notes for Today’s Games

1. Starting Pitchers-

  • Matt Harvey RHP NYM vs WAS- Every time he toes the rubber, Harvey is under automatic consideration to be used. Today he’ll face a Nationals line-up that really misses the effect of Bryce Harper’s presence. Harvey is pricey, but he’s also the top option of the night. The other pricey option is Max Scherzer RHP DET @ TB. Scherzer has been even better than Harvey lately and has beat down two of the best offenses in MLB in his last two starts. Last time Scherzer faced the Rays he went 7 IP with 8 Ks and only 1 ER.
  • Hisashi Iwakuma RHP SEA vs CHC- I just don’t think he could possibly have three bad outings in a row.
  • Julio Teheran RHP ATL vs ARI- I’ve said this before in this space, and I’ll say it again. Teheran has taken the next step in his development and could be something special if he continues on this trend. He’s harnessed his 95 MPH fastball and has been stellar at mixing in his plus change-up. His price is still reasonable on most sites.
  • Chris Capuano LHP LAD vs PHI- Chris hasn’t given up a run in his last two starts. Capuano has destroyed LHB this season to the tune of only 1 XBH  in 51 batters faced. I assume the Phillies will continue to start Utley, Howard, and Domonic Brown. If Capuano can navigate Delmon Young, Michael Young, and Carlos Ruiz, I think he could have another good start. He has some risk in the amount of innings he’ll pitch, but I think he’s a lock for 6 IP and 4 Ks. The earned runs are the only question mark.
  • Bartolo Colon RHP OAK vs STL- Normally I never pick a pitcher against the bats of the Cardinals, but Colon has a lot of value on DraftKings tonight at a $6,900 price tag. Colon has had a quality start in 12 of his 15 starts this year. On sites where innings carry heavier weight like DraftKings and Starstreet then Colon makes a nice gamble tonight.

2. Stud Hitters-

  • Wilin Rosario C COL- 4 straight multi-hit games. Rosario is a career .325 AVG/1.015 OPS vs LHP in his career. He’ll face LHP Barry Zito in Coors.
  • J.P. Arencibia C TOR- “Auto-dong” should have his opportunity to go deep in this game vs the weak arm of Allen Webster in the RH hitter’s park of Fenway.
  • Edwin Encarnacion 1B TOR- E5 has 18 HRs in 237 ABs vs RHP this year. Somebody is going to hit home runs for the Blue Jays in this game, and I think Encarnacion is as good a bet as any. On DK you must choose between Lind and Encranacion at 1B. I would choose E5 even though Lind’s peripherals are slightly better.
  • Chris Davis 1B/OF BAL- I like the flexibility of Davis on DraftKings. If you could find the budget for his huge 6,600 salary, I think he has a plus matchup vs RHP David Phelps.
  • Brandon Phillips 2B CIN- The 2B position is relatively weak today as far as matchups go. Phillips will face LHP Martin Perez. He did just have a newborn baby at home so that could either be a motivating factor or lack of sleep. Who knows? With not much else to choose from, you really have no other choice at the stud level.
  • Pablo Sandoval 3B SF- The Panda has more power from the left side of the plate and has a very favorable matchup vs Chacin in Coors.
  • David Wright 3B NYM- Wright is a career .334 AVG/ 1.005 OPS vs LHP. LHP Detwiler had an awful start his last time out and is giving up a .324 AVG and .813 OPS to RHB. It’s almost a perfect storm for a good game for Wright.
  • Hanley Ramirez SS LAD- **must start** Hanley has hit safely in 9 straight with 4 HRs, and he’ll face LHP John Lannan. That’s all that needs to be said.
  • Yasiel Puig OF LAD- I don’t think you can justify not using Puig these days. There’s really nobody that’s more consistent right now.
  • Michael Cuddyer OF COL- Cuddyer is hitting .345 AVG vs LHP and has been absolutely amazing at home hitting .385 AVG with a 1.103 OPS in Coors.
  • Andrew McCutchen OF PIT- I honestly don’t know much about Johnny Hellweg, but I know that he hasn’t faced a hitter like McCutchen.
  • Dexter Fowler OF COL- Fowler is one of the few switch hitters that hit better from the right side. Fowler has hit .300 vs LHP over the course of his career as opposed to .262 as a LHB. This year Fowler has seen his OPS rise to .962 to LHP and .931 at home.

Value Hitters

  • Mike Zunino C SEA- Zunino is only 2K on DraftKings. It’s not the greatest matchup in the world vs LHP Travis Wood, but a 2K player doesn’t have to do much to gain value.
  • John Buck C NYM- only on Fanduel where he’s 2,400, but I like the matchup vs LHP Detwiler
  • Carlos Ruiz C PHI- Facing LHP Chris Capuano really works in Ruiz’ favor. Ruiz has always hit LHP pretty well and has been seeing the ball really well over his 3 starts behind the dish. Don’t be surprised to see another mult-hit game out of him.
  • Brandon Moss 1B/OF OAK- Shelby Miller has been showing some chinks in the armor lately, and Moss has shown he can hit for power vs RHP (12 HRs and .508 SLG).
  • Omar Infante 2B DET- facing RHP Alex Colome is no small task, but Infante is a grinder.
  • Dan Uggla 2B ATL- Uggla is due for a HR. Delgado could have some nerves returning to Atlanta. I just worry about Uggla’s eye issues. High risk/High reward play
  • Juan Francisco 3B MIL- Juan is hitting .267 with 4 HRs over his last 10 games. He’ll face the flame throwing Cole tonight, but JuanFran has no problems with the fastball. It’s the crooked pitches that get him.
  • Josh Donaldson 3B OAK- At 3,700 I could see someone using Donaldson as speculation that Miller continues to struggle. Donaldson is hitting .290 AVG vs RHP.
  • Jhonny Peralta SS DET- Peralta has 6 of his 7 HRs vs RHP and still has a .295 AVG vs righties. He’s well worth the $3,300 price on Draft Kings
  • Jean Segua SS MIL- At 4,100 on DK that seems like a steal even if Segura has cooled a bit.
  • Nate Schierholtz OF CHC- He’s only 3,700 so He’d be worth the speculative play vs RHP Iwakuma who has struggled the last two times out and gave up 3 HRs the last game.
  • Austin Jackson OF DET- Jackson joins the other non-Miggy Tigers with cheap price tags on DK today. Shockingly this should be an easy stack to pull of for the GPPs.
  • Jason Heyward OF ATL- $3,900 on DK and facing a RHP Randall Delgado.
  • Matt Kemp OF LAD – Only 3K on Fanduel and proved last night that he’s fit with 2 SBs. Let’s just hope the power returns.

Stack ‘em Up

  • Rockies vs LHP Barry Zito
  • Blue Jays @ RHP Allen Webster
  • Dodgers vs LHP John Lannan
  • Mets vs LHP Ross Detwiler (perfect for a huge GPP mini-stack in my opinion)
  • Giants @ RHP Jhoulys Chacin

My DraftKings Lineup

P- Julio Teheran ATL $7,300

P- Bartolo Colon OAK $6,900

C- Mike Zunino SEA $2,000

1B- Edwin Encarnacion TOR $6,100

Five Notes for ALL the Games Today

1. Starting Pitchers-

  • Patrick Corbin LHP ARI @ WAS- Corbin is a **must start** today. He’s already pitching like one of the better pitchers in all of baseball. He’ll face the Nationals today that are the worst in MLB in AVG, OBP, and OPS vs LHP. Corbin destroys LHB. Nobody has stolen a base on him, seriously. I’m not saying it will be a cake walk for Corbin (Vegas has the Nats heavy favorites  -145), but it could be very close.
  • Derek Holland LHP TEX @ NYY- The Yankees still carry around a huge name, but their bats haven’t lived up to that name. The Yanks are 4th worst in MLB in OPS vs LHP. Holland has had three straight rough starts of 4 earned runs in each start. All five of Holland’s bad starts have come against teams with much better offenses than the Yankees. Holland has crushed mediocre to bad offenses this year.
  • Tyler Chatwood RHP COL vs NYM- Chatwood is living under the radar. He has given up 2 ER or less in each of his last 7 starts. Chatwood probably won’t strike out a ton of hitters (even though the Mets like to strike out), but he has done a really good job with men on base. It’s a risky way to pitch and could get him burned, but Chatwood is keeping the ball down. He has not given up a home run all year; that includes four starts in Coors.
  • Avoid Zack Greinke RHP LAD vs PHI as he has been struggling with LHB. If the LHB of the Dodgers are rocking then they are tough to beat because Puig and Hanley have been holding down the right side quite nicely. Corbin

2. Stud Hitters-

  • Wilin Rosario C COL- Rosario is streaky and has 3 straight mult-hit games and doesn’t lose power vs RHP.
  • Joe Mauer C MIN- You’ll have to pay, but nobody beats his consistency from this thin position.
  • Anthony Rizzo 1B CHC- The way Rizzo holds his hands will always make his susceptible to having slumps, but he’s catching serious fire lately with 5 XBH in last 5, two of which were long balls.
  • David Ortiz 1B BOS- always a possibility every night. I like this match-up vs Wang
  • Dustin Pedroia 2B BOS- I love the consistency of Pedroia. 3 straight muli-hit games
  • Adrian Beltre 3B TEX- Beltre is hitting RHP and LHP equally decent. Hughes should give Beltre some meat pitches to place over the Yankee fences.
  • Manny Machado 3B BAL- I’ll have a Double Machado please. Machado is hitting .344 vs RHP and a .891 OPS
  • Hanley Ramirez SS LAD- **must start** Hanley has a 9 game hit streak with 4 HRs and 5 mult-hit games. Heck he even stole a base last night.
  • Carlos Gonzalez OF COL- CarGo hasn’t HR’d in 6 games which means he’s due at the way he’s been playing in 2013.
  • Jacoby Ellsbury OF BOS- Facing the arm of Arencibia and the slow delivery of Wang makes me think there could be some stolen bases to be had for Ellsbury.
  • Yasiel Puig OF LAD- I’m a believer
  • Mike Trout OF LAA- just seems like an opportunity to go deep vs RHP Fister who can give HRs up out of nowhere. I like the way Trout has been hitting lately.

3. Value Hitters-

  • Salvador Perez C KC- best cheap catcher on FD, and does very well vs RHP
  • Carlos Ruiz C PHI- 2,700 on Fanduel. Chooch is under-priced and heating up at the dish. Don’t love the matchup vs Greinke, but he’s always a threat for  a couple of hits.
  • Mike Napoli 1B BOS- 3,400 on Fanduel doesn’t necessarily make Napoli a value play, but I think with his talent and hitting as of late he could have a good enough game vs Wang to warrant value even at 3,400. Additionally there aren’t many cheap 1B options today
  • Billy Butler 1B KC- if you must grab a 1B under 3K on FD then Butler seems to be the best bet. Even though Deduno is sneaky good, I think Butler is going to start exhibiting that power that we all know is coming.
  • Darwin Barney 2B CHC- not the sexiest pick, but Barney has hit safely in 6 straight games including 3 XBHs and 4 runs.
  • Nolan Arenado 3B COL- keeping with the Rockies stack, Vegas is predicting runs in this one 10, and I don’t think Chatwood is going to be the one serving them up.
  • Luis Valbuena 3B CHC- all the Cubs are still cheap on Fanduel as Valbuena is 2,700. Valbuena has hit safely in 10 of last 11 and has a decent .826 OPS vs LHP
  • Jimmy Rollins SS PHI- Greinke has shown weakness towards LHB so far this year. JRoll has hit slightly better from the LH side of the plate. He may still be a reach.
  • Andre Ethier OF LAD- Ethier hasn’t had the best of seasons but hasn’t been awful vs RHP. Pettibone struggles vs LHB.
  • Ryan Sweeney OF CHC- In keeping with the value love affair with the Cubs, Sweeney has 4 XBH during his current 5 game hit streak.
  • Alex Gordon OF KC- Gordon seems like he may be getting out of his awful slump with a HR and walk-off hit yesterday.
  • David Murphy OF TEX- Murphy is always a HR threat vs RHP. Hughes has been disastrous at home.
  • Daniel Nava OF BOS- 3,300 on FD. Nava crushes RHP, and Wang could get lit up on any given night.

4. Stack ‘em Up-

  • Rockies vs RHP Jeremy Hefner
  • Red Sox (LHB) vs RHP Chien-Ming Wang
  • Rangers @ RHP Phil Hughes
  • Cubs @ RHP Wily Peralta

5. Here’s a Fanduel, all-day lineup:

P- Patrick Corbin ARI $7,600

C- Salvador Perez KC $2,800

1B- Mike Napoli BOS $3,400

2B- Dustin Pedroia BOS $3,900

3B- Manny Machado BAL $3,200

SS- Jimmy Rollins PHI $2,900

OF- Carlos Gonzalez COL $5,700

OF- Andre Ethier LAD $2,700

OF- Ryan Sweeney CHC $2,800

The MLB Fives_03Five Notes for Today’s Games

**Watch the weather radar escpially in Boston and Chicago, both these games have increasing chances of storms**

1. Starting Pitchers

  • I can’t blame if you were to want to use Yu Darvish RHP TEX @ NYY or Chris Sale LHP CWS vs NYM. They have been dominant and consistent. They also have massive price tags. I would argue there are some cheaper options out there today.
  • Jeff Locke LHP PIT @ SEA- Locke has been pitching a bit over his head, but he has also shown a lot of poise and a plus, plus slider. Locke hasn’t given up a run in his last two starts and hasn’t given up more than 3 earned runs since April 18. Seattle is bottom 5 in MLB in AVG and OPS vs LHP. Really the only weapons they have against lefties are hurt or slumping. Don’t be surprised to see Locke put in another quality start and probably a W today.
  • Jose Fernandez RHP MIA vs MIN- Normally, I’m not that into Home/Away splits but the Cuban, Fernandez, has an eye opening difference in his performance near his home as opposed to on the road. At home, Fernandez has a 1.75 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a BAA of .186. Away from Miami, Fernandez ERA balloons to 4.12 and WHIP rises a bit to 1.19. The thing I like most about Fernandez is that his tight, backdoor curve is almost more devastating to LHB than RHB. So the Twins will not have an advantage if they lefty-load today. I’m in on Fernandez on any two pitcher sites.
  • Kris Medlen RHP ATL @ KC- You never know which Medlen you are going to get most nights, but Medlen has done a great job reducing his numbers as the season has progressed. He was roughed up by the Giants his last time out, but I don’t think Medlen will have much of a problem with the lowly bats out in Kansas City. KC is bottom 3 in OPS vs RHP. Maybe Kris isn’t the safest option, but he has a higher K ceiling than Locke.
  • Here’s where today gets tricky. There are so many viable starting pitcher options, it is going to be difficult to pin down which one is going to be the best value. I also like Zach Wheeler RHP NYM @ CWS. Wheeler has nasty stuff as evidenced by his last start, but he is also having trouble locating that nastiness. He’s minimum salary some places and would be the perfect compliment to a Tigers stack on Draft Kings. The other two options you will be staring at are mid-tier guys with a slight risk for a blow-up start: Kyle Lohse RHP MIL vs CHC and Jake Westbrook RHP STL @ HOU. Westbrook might actually strike some batters out since he’ll get to face the Astros. Lohse has only given up 1 earned run in each of his last three starts, and he’ll face the Cubs who field a barely competitive lineup on a nightly basis. I don’t know if I will use either of these two, but they should be mentioned.  fernandez

2. Stud Hitters

  • Jonathan Lucroy C MIL- hitting .395 over last 10 games and .371 over his last 27 games. I like this matchup vs Edwin Jackson at home
  • David Ortiz 1B BOS- he’s going deep today. Boomstick.
  • Matt Carpenter 2B/3B STL- continues to hit well, especially RHP. Multi-hit games in 3 of last 4
  • Miguel Cabrera 3B DET- **must start** Cabrera is hitting .462 AVG and 1.370 OPS vs LHP and faces the meat-throwing LHP C.J. Wilson
  • Hanley Ramirez SS LAD – **must start** HanRam has struggled against LHP in a very small sample size this year, but he is seeing the ball really well and even has 3 HRs in his current 7 game hit streak.
  • Jhonny Peralta SS DET- .406 AVG vs LHP
  • Yasiel Puig OF LAD- hitting .565 AVG with a 1.609 OPS vs LHP in just 23 ABs. It is worth noting that he will face the horrible LHP Mike Kickham
  • Austin Jackson OF DET- .423 AVG over last 10 games. Look for a steal or two if Iannetta is behind the plate.
  • Andrew McCutchen OF PIT- hit safely in last four and finally gets a soft-tossing LHP in Joe Saunders
  • Carlos Gonzalez OF COL- Dempster has 12 HRs in his last 10 games and I think we’ll see CarGo add to that total.

3. Value Hitters

  • Carlos Ruiz C PHI- hitting .375 AVG over last 10 games, only 3,300 on DK
  • Mike Zunino C SEA- don’t love the matchup vs LHP Locke, but do love the 2,000 price tag for stacks
  • Matt Adams 1B STL- I feel like there may be an Adams Sighting today, facing a RHP would do well for his cheap price tags most place. Somebody free Matt Adams from the Cardinals
  • Ben Zobrist 2B/OF TB- 3,800 price tag on DK makes him a viable play vs LHP Mark Buerhle
  • Anthony Rendon 3B WAS- 3 multi-hit games in last 4
  • Zack Cozart SS CIN- 3,2oo on DK, facing LHP Tommy Milone.
  • Wil Myers OF TB- still cheap enough at 3,600 on DK, facing a LHP
  • Jay Bruce OF CIN- he’s smashing LHP, 7 HRs and .282 AVG in 103 ABs
  • Josh Reddick OF OAK- perfect opportunity for XBH today vs RHP Bronson Arroyo

4. Stack ‘em Up- Dodgers vs LHP Mike Kickham, Tigers vs LHP C.J. Wilson, Braves @ RHP Ervin Santana, Red Sox vs RHP Juan Nicasio, and Rays vs LHP Mark Buerhle

5. Interesting Notes

  • Matt Kemp OF LAD- should make his return to the lineup today vs LHP Mike Kickham, love this matchup if you are brave
  • Aaron Hill 2B ARI – makes his return from the DL. He hit .375 and 6 RBIs during his 24 ABs on his Minor League rehab stint. He’s not cheap but has an interesting matchup vs the newly vulnerable LHP Gio Gonzalez.
  • How the mighty have fallen. Starlin Castro SS CHC has seen his price drop all the way to the minimum on Fanduel. I wouldn’t use him today, but he deserves to be kept in the back of your mind or as a roster filler.
  • Note for tomorrow- Jose Reyes SS TOR will be activated from the DL on Wednesday.
  • The Yankees have scored the second lowest amount of runs (150), lowest AVG (.219), lowest OPS (.604) in the month of June.

Five Notes for the Late Games

1. Starting Pitchers- So today there is Mike Minor LHP ATL vs NYM and Lance Lynn RHP STL vs CHC as my absolute favorites. Minor has been a top 5 pitcher in baseball over the last calendar year, and I don’t think this Cubs lineup is good at all even though they touched up Wainwright the other night. Felix Hernandez RHP SEA @ LAA is always a good option but his price is a little high on the happens chance that he faces the good-hitting version of the Angels. The cheap plays are going to be Stephen Fife RHP LAD vs SD and Roy Oswalt RHP COL @ WAS. Fife has stuck out at least 4 and has not given up more that 2 ER in any of his 3 starts since returning to the Dodger starting rotation. Oswalt will face a struggling Nationals team for his first start back. He still has some skills and has that lovely minimum price on DraftKings. For you early gamers, I like Yovani Gallardo RHP MIL @ HOU as he gets to face off against the Astros and hasn’t given up a run in his last two starts.  puig

2. Stud Hitters- Buster Posey C SF (hitting 7 of his 8 HRs vs RHP and Koehler has been serving it up lately), Prince Fielder 1B DET (slump buster game vs RHP John Lackey), Adrian Gonzalez 1B LAD (XBH in 3 of last 4 and 7 of 8 HRs have come against RHP facing Jason Marquis), Dustin Pedroia 2B BOS (not a believer in soft-tossing LHP Jose Alvarez), Evan Longoria 3B TB (hitting .333 AVG and .936 OPS against LHP), Hanley Ramirez SS LAD (best available), Giancarlo Stanton OF MIA (hit safely in 8 of last 9 since returning from DL), Yasiel Puig OF LAD (turning into the picture of consistency), and Carlos Beltran OF STL (still swinging a hot bat if you can wiggle him in your LU, plus I think Feldman is due to get smacked around a bit).

3. Value Hitters- Mike Zunino C SEA (Hanson doesn’t intimidate me from using Zunino as a minimum-salary, catcher punt),  Matt Adams 1B STL (feeling like there will be an Adams sighting today), Marco Scutaro 2B SF, Chris Johnson 1B/3B ATL (hit 3 run HR last night and has killed LHP at times this year, .371 AVG vs LHP),  Andrelton Simmons SS ATL (should get some SB opps and Runs if he can get on base), Jonny Gomes OF BOSWil Myers OF TB (must start at minimum salary on Starstreet), and Ryan Sweeney OF CHC (who knows the Socrdave hero could strike again facing a good RHP Lance Lynn).

4. Stack ‘em Up- Braves vs LHP Jon Niese, Red Sox @ LHP Jose Alvarez, Rays vs LHP Andy Pettitte, Dodgers vs RHP Jason Marquis, and Giants vs RHP Tom Koehler

5. My Starstreet Lineup

P- Mike Minor ATL $27,200

P- Lance Lynn STL $25,900

C- Mike Zunino SEA $2,000

1B- Prince Fielder DET $6,300

2B- Dustin Pedroia BOS $6,300

3B- Evan Longoria TB $6,300

SS- Andrelton Simmons ATL $4,400

OF- Giancarlo Stanton MIA $7,500

OF- Carlos Beltran STL $7,300

OF- Wil Myers TB $2,000

Util- Brandon Belt SF $4,800 (also like Chris Johnson at 4,100 here which would give you 700 more for wiggle)

Five Notes for the LATE Games

Even though there is weather everywhere, I’m ranking players from all games. Just do your diligence and check weather radars closer to game time.

1. Starting Pitchers- It can get a little difficult to find value in a day where there is so much of a gap between the stud pitchers and the value pitchers. This may be the day to spend a little more on your pitching. Cliff Lee LHP PHI vs WAS is my favorite pitcher play of the day. He’s followed closely behind by Matt Cain RHP SF vs SD and Adam Wainwright RHP STL vs CHC. As for the value plays I really only see three viable plays: Zack Wheeler RHP NYM @ ATL making his debut, Alfredo Figaro RHP MIL @ HOU, and Ubaldo Jimenez RHP CLE vs KC. Wheeler is a GPP play because of his high risk/high reward value facing the strikeout-prone Braves. If not for a looming Jason Castro home run in this game I would be using Figaro everywhere. The propensity of the Astros to strike out in bunches vs RHP and Figaro’s sharp 37/7 K/BB ratio have me feeling like he could put up some serious K numbers. Another cool fact about Figaro is the extreme jump in his fastball velocity this season (from a career avg 92 mph to 95 mph which is 3rd behind Strasburg and Harvey as fastest among SP). Jimenez will face the Royals who are the second worst team in MLB in OPS to opposing RHPs. That is not a small sample size effect. They are really that bad, especially the left-handed bats.

2. Stud Hitters- Wilin Rosario C COL (Rosario lose AVG but not power vs RHP and Esmil Rogers is due to give up a couple of HRs), Joey Votto 1B CIN (Morton can struggle vs LHB, Votto is a top play today), Albert Pujols 1B LAA (4 mult-hit games in last 5, heating up and facing RHP Jeremy Bonderman who is awful), Howie Kendrick 2B LAA (blazing hot, keep using), Jason Kipnis 2B CLE (.448 AVG over last 10 and facing a RHP in Ervin Santana), Aramis Ramirez 3B MIL (love the matchup, he’s only 4,100 on DK), Miguel Cabrera 3B DET (everyday play), Jean Segura SS MIL (3,900 on DK, good stack play), Mike Trout OF LAA (no brainer if you can afford him facing Jeremy Bonderman), Jose Bautista OF TOR (perfect opportunity for Bautista to go deep today), Austin Jackson OF DET (he hasn’t lost a step, should score a run or two today), Mark Trumbo OF LAA (hasn’t HR’d in 10 games, he’s the DUE Angel to go yard today), Carlos Gonzalez OF COL (I’m spending on OF today, and CarGo has another good matchup vs RHP Rogers), and Jay Bruce OF CIN (4 HRs in last 10 games, could make that 5 out of last 11 facing RHP Morton at home). Cincinnatti Reds first baseman, Joey Votto. PHOTOGRAPHER: Dylan Coulter

3. Value Hitters- Jonathan Lucroy C MIL (3,800 on DK, .356 AVG and .958 OPS in June and facing beatable RHP Lyles), Michael Zunino C SEA (minimum salary with HR potential vs RHP Joe Blanton), Victor Martinez C/1B DET (use him today vs LHP Britton, no real difference for career batting L/R for VMart), Matt Carpenter 2B/3B STL (only 3,600 on DK, that’s too cheap not to use), Anthony Rendon 2B/3B WAS (Minimum salary 2,000 on DK, but high risk/ high reward facing LHP Cliff Lee), Jhonny Peralta SS DET (3,600 on DK facing a LHP Britton, .424 AVG and 1.120 OPS vs LHP), Wil Myers OF TB (not a super huge Myers fan for this year, but I think he could go deep today in his debut vs LHP Doubront, 3,800 on DK), Raul Ibanez OF SEA (3,600 on DK, still has HR potenital facing a HR giving RHP in Joe Blanton), and Avisail Garcia OF DET (Garcia should start today vs LHP Britton, strictly a HR or nothing play if you decide to go with Garcia).

4. Stack ‘em Up- Reds vs RHP Charlie Morton, Blue Jays vs LHP Jeff Francis (the Jays are bound to start hitting LHPs better), Brewers @ RHP Jordan Lyles, Tigers vs LHP Zach Britton, and Angels vs RHP Jeremy Bonderman.

5. My DraftKings Lineup- I decided it would be helpful to show how I use this information I give everyday to build a lineup of my own.

P- Cliff Lee PHI $11,000

P- Ubaldo Jimenez CLE $7,500

C- Michael Zunino SEA $2,000

1B- Joey Votto CIN $5,400

2B- Matt Carpenter STL $3,600

3B- Aramis Ramirez MIL $4,100

SS- Jhonny Peralta DET $3,600

OF- Jay Bruce CIN $4,600

OF- Austin Jackson DET $4,400

OF- Wil Myers TB $3,800

Five Notes for Today’s Games

No players from the Cubs/Cards and Mets/Braves games were ranked due to weather concerns in both those games.

1. Starting Pitchers- Today is not going to be an easy day to navigate starting pitching. With weather over 60 percent chance in the Cardinals/Cubs and Mets/Braves games, we  lose several good options, especially Shelby Miller. Max Scherzer RHP DET vs BAL is normally a slam dunk play as well, but I’m not starting any right-handed pitcher against the Orioles bats. My favorite starter of the day is Patrick Corbin LHP ARI vs MIA. The Marlins have been playing much better ball since Giancarlo Stanton has returned, and Corbin has been showing some regression. Corbin is still the top option. James Shields RHP KC @ CLE is another favorite starter. Shields has only given up more than 3 runs in 2 of his 14 starts, all of those 11 were also quality starts. The Indians are solid enough but have been struggling to score runs as of late. Past these two pitchers it gets a lot more complicated. I don’t hate Francisco Liriano LHP PIT @ CIN or Jason Vargas LHP LAA vs SEA. Liriano struck out 11 Reds the last time they faced off on May 31, and I love to start pitchers facing former teams which is the case of Jason Vargas facing Seattle (John Lannan is facing a former team as well, but it’s John Lannan). The only other possible pitcher in my mind would be Jacob Turner RHP MIA @ ARI if you were to want to fade the Corbin pick. Turner has looked exceptional so far, and the D’backs bats have disappeared. james_shields-247

2. Stud Hitters- John Jaso C OAK (.449 AVG over last 10, facing RHP Tepesch), Prince Fielder 1B DET (no HRs in last 10 but hitting .352, facing Arrieta so he’s due), Howie Kendrick 2B LAA (nobody hotter, .513 over last 10, 9 multi-hit games in June), Miguel Cabrera 3B DET (find a way to roster him, must start), Ryan Zimmerman 3B WAS (facing LHP John Lannan, 5 game hit streak ended yesterday and 2 HRs in last 4), Ian Desmond SS WAS (best SS option today), Mike Trout OF LAA (loves facing RHP and Harang is a bad one), Alex Gordon OF KC (rattled off 4 game hit streak after struggling lately, facing RHP Carrasco), Michael Cuddyer OF COL (14 game hit streak, hitting RHP well, only 4,500 on DK), Jason Werth OF WAS (first time on my list, but hitting well lately and very familiar with John Lannan’s stuff or lack thereof), and Austin Jackson OF DET (stack play atop the Tigers lineup, doing fine in his first 3 games back from injury).

3. Value Hitters- Mike Zunino C SEA (bottom barrel priced and has a plus bat at a bad position , facing a LHP Jason Vargas), Brayan Pena C DET (Avila was hurt yesterday and hits .375 with 2 HRs vs RHP, a must start on Starstreet), Victor Martinez C/1B DET (finally has 1B elig, priced at 3,400 on DK), Eric Hosmer 1B KC (BB up, Ks down, 4 multi-hit games in last 10, facing RHP Carrasco), Elliot Johnson SS/2B KC (hit safely in 4 straight with 3 XBH), Anthony Rendon 3B WAS (facing a LHP and streaking), Matt Dominguez 3B HOU (.298 with 7 of 9 HRs at Home), Zack Cozart SS CIN (3,600 on DK, hit safely in last 6 with 4 multi-hit games), J.D. Martinez OF HOU, Kyle Blanks OF SD (he’s really coming into his own lately, facing a LHP Barry Zito), and Josh Reddick OF OAK (4,300 on Starstreet and 2,700 on FD, hitting better since DL return and was incredible yesterday).

4. Stack ‘em Up- If the weather lets up then the Braves vs RHP Dillon Gee is a must stack, Tigers vs RHP Jake Arrieta is also a must stack, Nationals @ LHP John Lannan, Royals @ RHP Carlos Carrasco, and Angels vs RHP Aaron Harang.

5. The Home Run Factor- I’m going to change this section up a little bit. I’m going to rank five players due for one reason or another to hit a home run (in order of least likely to most likely). 5- John Jaso C OAK only has one HR all year and that came way back on April 9th. His slugging has ticked up a bit in June, and Jaso is getting ridiculous contact. Facing Tepesch, a mediocre RHP, only helps Jaso stake a claim to go deep. 4- Howie Kendrick 2B LAA   is on his way to claiming the AL batting title. Remarkably he has been the best Angel hitter so far. I think he’ll get an opportunity for a fat pitch from Harang. Whether Kendrick rips a double or goes deep is really a matter of chance, but he will do one or the other. 3- Eric Hosmer 1B KC was the first guy that I predicted to hit his first home run and really started the popularity of this section. He returns because of highly favorable matchup vs RHP Carlos Carrasco. Hosmer is hitting .305 through June and will have a good game today. We’ll see if that translates into a deep fly. 2- Alex Gordon OF KC has no HRs in the month of June, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s my second biggest long-shot to hit a long shot. Gordon has hit LHP far better than RHP so far in 2013, but that will correct itself starting today. If I had a due factor and were only picking one guy to go deep it would be Alex Gordon today. I can all but guarantee a home run from 1- Prince Fielder 1B DET. The only reason I won’t guarantee on Fielder is that he seems to always disappoint when I love his matchup. I love his matchup today, but I don’t think that will hold him back from hitting at least one out of the park.

Five Notes for Today’s Games

1. Starting Pitchers- Max Scherzer RHP DET @ KC is the ace of the day. He continues to keep damage down in his starts and will always strike batters out. He should also walk out with a victory in this one. The only draw back to Scherzer’s game is that he doesn’t go deep into games because of high pitch counts. If that’s all you have to worry about then you’re in pretty good shape. C.C. Sabathia LHP NYY @ OAK always pitches better near his old stomping grounds, but the A’s feast on LHP. The only other ace-like pitcher I would consider for today would be Cole Hamels LHP PHI @ MIN. Hamels has been a little up and down this year, but the Twins don’t have very many RHB other than Josh Willingham to challenge him. There is a plethora of intriguing rookie and cheap pitching options today. I worry about Cingrani in that he will be facing the Cubs for the third time and the book is out on him. The Cubs won’t be surprised. Chien-Ming Wang makes his debut against an awful White Sox team that struggles to hit RHP. Wang doesn’t strike out enough batters to warrant consideration today, but he could be the perfect 3 SP on Draftstreet. As for the cheap pitchers, I will be sticking with Gerrit Cole RHP PIT vs SF making his Major League debut and my boy Michael Wacha RHP STL @ NYM who struggled last time out but still has all the skills in the world to handle the Mets. I would go cheap on pitching today and load up on studs. trumbo

2. Stud Hitters- Jason Castro C HOU (beatable RHP for the splits king), Prince Fielder 1B DET (Davis is not what we thought he could be, Fielder should see some fat pitches), Matt Carpenter 2B/3B STL, Troy Tulowitzki SS COL (facing a meat throwing Haren in Coors, almost a must-start if not for the huge salary), Manny Machado 3B BAL (facing LHP Vargas, expect multi-hits), Mark Trumbo 1B/OF LAA (kills RHP and faces a pitcher struggling vs RHB, must start of the day), Jose Bautista OF TOR (two straight mult-hit games, Quintana gave up 3 HRs last time out), Carlos Beltran OF STL (better as a LHB), and Carlos Gonzalez OF COL (seeing meat pitching in Coors could mean good things).

3. Value Hitters- Victor Martinez C DET (hit safely in 8 out of last 10, hits better as LHB and has all 5 of his HRs from that side of the plate), Matt Adams 1B STL (hoping for an Adams sighting today) if not Adams then  Chris McGuiness 1B TEX (good on base guy with some XB potential, super cheap most places), Ryan Roberts 2B/3B TB (.321 AVG 3 HRs in 56 ABs vs LHP), Stephen Drew SS BOS (.314 in June with a .923 OPS, heating up and facing a RHP), Josh Donaldson 3B OAK (3,700 on DK, even though he’s facing Sabathia that’s still way too cheap for the LHP smashing Donaldson), J.D. Martinez OF HOU (facing the pitiful Aaron Harang), Gerardo Parra OF ARI (standard cheap play vs all RHP even Greinke), and Jason Heyward OF ATL (still too cheap for his hotness right now, 2 HRs last night).

4. Stack ‘em Up- Angels @ RHP Miguel Gonzalez (struggles with RHB), Rockies vs RHP Dan Haren, Rangers vs RHP Corey Kluber, Tigers @ RHP Wade Davis, and Red Sox @ RHP Roberto Hernandez. It’s a pretty standard stack list today.

MLB: Baltimore Orioles at Minnesota Twins

5. The Due Factor- Finally the Due Factor got one right with Josh Hamilton going boom last night. In doing so, Josh Hamilton saved the Due Factor from going the way to extinction. Manny Machado 3B BAL has been a machine this year. He’s currently riding an 8 game hitting streak. Machado hasn’t hit a home run since the last time the Orioles faced the Angels. That was on May 5th. So a month has passed since Machado’s last HR. Machado has also failed to hit a HR off of a LHP so far this year. Manny Machado is double-DUE to go deep today vs Angels LHP Jason Vargas.
